Let me tell you about my favorite phone call to get. I know you are probably thinking it's the one where someone says, "Come list my million-dollar property!" (Yes, that is amazing, you can definitely call me about that. 😉)

My favorite is actually the "Can you help me buy my first house?" call.

I've known this lady since she graduated high school. It has been so incredible getting to watch her grow into the hardworking, successful woman that she is today.

So when she called about buying her first home, it was the kind of call that I am most excited to get. The call to help a friend with one of life's biggest achievements.

Friend, you've earned every bit of this. You've accomplished so much, and I am so proud of you.

Congratulations, you did it, and I can't wait to see what is next for you!

It’s a curse and a blessing, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’d say going on vacation is a business strategy at this point!

5 reasons your dollar is best spent locally.

5) About $0.68 of every dollar spent locally gets reinvested in your community. This isn't just about keeping money in the same spot. It's about making that money the most effective. When you spend your money inside your community, it creates an economic synergy. You decide what businesses survive with your hard-earned dollars.

4) You create a better place to live. Towns thriving with local, small businesses are just more interesting, culturally vibrant places to live. No one wants to live in a city dominated by national chains and big box stores. Ironically, if you want more variety and specialty options, think smaller. Not bigger.

3) Local businesses have to serve their communities well. They literally can't afford to offer a bad product or a substandard service. They don't have big, fancy marketing budgets to make up for it. So, every dollar and every customer counts. Most small businesses literally have their name on their buildings, so it's their reputation that's at stake, not just the bottom line.

2) Your dollar spent locally buys you access to real people, not a customer service line. Small business owners are passionate about what they do, so they are your best source of expert information on the subject. You don't have to worry about your call or your concern being outsourced to an overseas center. Chances are you'll be speaking to a knowledgeable business owner or employee when you shop locally.

In my opinion, you can't really learn entrepreneurship in a classroom. That's why whenever I see a kid's lemonade stand here in town, I stop and support them. The best way to encourage more kids to explore entrepreneurship is to help them experience what it's like to be a small business owner. Things like learning how to make sales, offering friendly customer service, even mastering the upsell (would you like a cookie with your lemonade?) There's just no book or curriculum that can inspire a kid the way that real life does.

At the end of the day, the more kids here in Big Bear Lake that we can inspire, the more future entrepreneurship we'll have here.

So, can I ask you a favor?

If you know of any kids who might be interested in having a lemonade stand this summer (even if it's just for one day), please let me know! I would love to "sponsor" them and buy their ingredients, supplies, and even invest a few hundred dollars of my own money promoting their lemonade stand on social media. Because of the regular marketing I do as a Realtor, I have a few thousand followers here in the greater Big Bear Lake area. I think we could drive a lot of business to local lemonade stands, and in doing so, give some youngsters an exciting taste of what entrepreneurship is like. Who knows, maybe some of them will grow up to start companies and create hundreds of jobs here!

I like to think long term. 🙂

But long term vision starts with short term action.

Time for a history lesson. Anytime someone uses the phrase "plain vanilla," as if it somehow means boring or unoriginal, I kind of laugh to myself. Apparently, most don't know the real history of vanilla.

For starters, it's the second most expensive spice in the world ( #1 is saffron). Vanilla is the only edible fruit out of 35,000 species of orchid. Frankly, it's a statistical miracle. It requires a special tropical climate to grow, and each flower blooms for, wait for it... one day.

Pound for pound, vanilla seeds are worth more than silver.

Historically, only kings could afford such a rare delicacy as vanilla.

Not to mention the invention of ice cream itself, which would have required sending an expedition to the mountains to bring back ice during a hot summer. And yet here I am, casually enjoying this frozen dessert flavored with one of the most miraculous spices in the world. 🍦

You may call it "plain vanilla." I call it a miracle.

Modern life is pretty amazing if you have an attitude of gratitude. 🙂
