It’s no surprise that A-Frames are the thing these days up here in Big Bear. I’ll stand firm in the belief that one of the biggest selling points for cabins is coziness. Like any other concept, coziness can be boiled down—its essence extracted and smeared onto the walls.
A cozy cabin must adhere to some very basic principles:
1. It must exhibit warmth.
Dark wood interiors with pops of color, burnished bronze, and moments of brightness help accentuate a room’s warmth. Natural light is absolutely essential for this effect. You should feel as though you’re always on the brink of a nap—a dangerous way to live, I know.
2. The views are everything.
Views are a luxury here in the mountains (and anywhere, really). A-Frames excel at showcasing them in all their glory. Full-frame custom windows blast your retinas with the deep dark of the woods at night, or the dazzling, snow-tipped slopes of Bear Mountain. This—this—is the key to coziness. And coziness… is key.
3. A loafing life.
“Functionality first” design slapped onto a cabin in the woods? That’s not for me. I don’t want my mountain home to feel smart when my #1 goal is to drink cocoa and gaze into a fire for hours. What matters more is the feeling: thoughtfully placed furniture, layers of texture—blankets, rugs, fixtures. Softness and smoothness, wrapped in a dimly lit, warm environment, push your cozy factor to a perfect ten.
When buying a vacation home, commit to cozy. Trend-chasing is for the birds.
I’ll link some examples below of what I consider great cozy mountain interiors.

On some weekends, over 100,000 tourists troop down to Big Bear Lake to enjoy a unique and fun getaway in Southern California. For a city with a population
