People call for "broken AC" in a heat wave. Often the AC is fine. The filter strangled it.

Your furnace and central AC share the same blower and the same indoor coil. In cooling mode, that coil runs cold and pulls moisture out of the air. It needs a steady stream of warm room air flowing across it to stay above freezing. Choke that airflow with a clogged filter, the coil temperature drops below 32 degrees, condensation freezes, and a sheet of ice builds up. The ice chokes airflow further, so it snowballs: weaker cooling, then no cooling, then a melting block that overruns the condensate drain pan and drips through the ceiling below.

Run a frozen system long enough and you can also slug liquid refrigerant back to the compressor, which is a far more expensive failure than any filter. Techs who arrive to a "dead" AC often just find a filter that looks like a gray blanket.

If your AC suddenly weakens, check the filter first. If you see frost on the refrigerant line or the coil, shut the system off, switch the fan to "on" to melt the ice, replace the filter, and only then run cooling again. Then put a monthly filter check on the calendar so it doesn't repeat next summer. [VP1WY]
