Lil Red Wagon: Fresh Food, Big Heart

What started as a weekend side hustle in 2019 turned into something much bigger when life threw Melissa and Larry Bautista an unexpected curveball.

Like so many people in 2020, they suddenly found themselves facing uncertainty in their regular jobs. Rather than giving up, they pivoted. They took a chance on themselves and turned Lil' Red Wagon into a full-time business.

Starting with a used trailer and a dream, Melissa and Larry built their business one customer at a time. Today, Lil' Red Wagon has become a favorite around Billings, serving up their famous Montana Cheesesteaks along with tacos, nachos, salads, and protein bowls made with fresh, hand-cut beef.

But what really stands out isn't just the food. It's the people behind it.

Melissa and Larry have built more than a successful business. They've built relationships. They believe in living simply, giving back to the community, and making memories through travel and new experiences. Along the way, they've supported causes close to their hearts, including addiction recovery, su***de prevention, and Relay for Life.

Their story is a reminder that sometimes life's unexpected turns lead to opportunities we never imagined.

And thanks to a whole lot of hard work, and the support of the Billings community, Lil' Red Wagon continues to roll on, serving great food and bringing people together one meal at a time.

My friend Ardell has had a green thumb for years and is now sharing it in a huge way with the Laurel community at Ardell's Flower Pots and Greenhouse . They’re open Monday - Saturday 10am - 6pm, and closed on Sunday. I’m so excited to see her open her own greenhouse and it happens to be on my commute. She & I used to work together years ago at the former Big Sky Greenhouse.

I knew before going in that she would have superb plants because she taught me so much years ago. She has an eye for putting together pots with beautiful pops of color!

Just a short drive south of Laurel, you can find her at 745 Clarks River Road. She's got a gorgeous selection of annuals, some perennials, herbs, some vegetables and BEAUTIFUL baskets!

It may be a little late for this year, but plan ahead and stop by to get ideas for ordering next year. Ardell is truly a gem; she loves her clients and knows her flowers!

I want to tell you about Mike’s great uncle and a young hero from Billings. His name was Joe McClellan, Jr. A graduate of Billings Senior HS, Washington State College, and a fighter pilot who gave everything for our country in WWII.

He was the quintessential All American kid. A starter on his high school basketball team. Elected the “Handsomest Boy” in college.

He married his college sweetheart June 2, 1941 and left to join the Pacific troops as a fighter pilot later that month.

While stationed in the Philippines, Joe was captured. While he survived the infamous Death March as a POW, the brutal conditions took their toll.

2nd Lieutenant Joseph Lewis McClellan, Jr. died July 30, 1942 at age 25.

It’s easy to get lost in the holiday. To many of us, it’s a day off work or a family cookout. And while I like to think that those who served would want us to celebrate those freedoms, let’s not forget those who died protecting them.

This Memorial Day, let’s remember that this national holiday is specifically meant to honor those who died. All those brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Folks just like Joe.
