🍂❄️🍁🧤🏠🧹🪟💨 Take advantage of this weekend's beautiful weather and do a little HOME work:
Clean your gutters, clean your window wells, make sure your downspouts are extended and start preparing to shut down and winterize your exterior hose spigots. Look at the visible portions of your roof coverings and siding. Look for any signs of damage.
Now, take a peak in your attic (if you can safely). Look for signs of roof leaks around chimneys and roof vents, (also check for signs of any animal activity) and make sure your insulation is in position and your attic access is properly sealed.
Test your smoke and CO alarms, replace any old ones, and speak with your family about fire safety.
Get your furnace or boiler serviced. Make sure there aren't any clothes (and other combustibles) in contact with your furnace or boiler.
Clean your electric baseboard heaters (helps with that initial bad odor) and make sure your curtains and any furniture are not in contact with any of them.
Close your storm windows. Put plastic window treatments over drafty windows.
Did I mention to check your smoke and CO alarms??? Really important that you do.

This goes the same for any of your rental properties. Take a nice fall drive, check out the leaves and make sure your investments are ready for winter. 🍂❄️🍁🧤🏠🧹🪟💨

Sharing this again because it is SO important!

We put a safety comment about smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors as a “repair/replace” item in every single report. Our reports are categorized as inspected, not inspected, not present, repair/replace etc. even if there are working ones in the house it goes under the “repair/replace” category so that it is then reiterated in the summary at the bottom of the report. It’s the MOST important appliance in the house, in our opinion and you really need to do your due diligence to be sure that A) You have working smoking and carbon monoxide detectors B) They are in the correct locations and C) You have replaced the batteries as the manufacturer recommends and that the alarms are not expired!

It’s an Important piece and sometimes people forget as they go through the rest of the process of buying a home! Get that on the books! 🏠🔍🧐🗓️

🔍 🐜🚨 PEST ALERT 🔍 🐜🚨

Our inspectors have been encountering more and more carpenter ants on inspections these last few weeks. We have seen them in well maintained homes and often times homeowners aren’t aware of their presence. Did you know that carpenter ants are most active in the fall? Carpenter ants are attracted to wet wood and will often establish a nest in your home in the fall. Check out below for some preventative measures:

🐜 remove attractants away from your home such as fire wood, dead limbs and other yard debris
🐜 fix leaky pipes and damaged roof coverings to prevent moisture entry (because remember, carpenter ants like wet wood!)
🐜 make sure your home is properly ventilated to prevent moisture buildup
🐜 look for signs such as frass (saw dust like material), deteriorate wood or the presence of ants
🐜 when in doubt call a pest control professional!
