A message from President Harvey Stenger about what the fall semester will look like
Dear Students,
I think it's safe to say that the past year has not been the typical one. I fully understand that the pandemic has made college life much different than you expected. It has been frustrating to all of us on campus trying to provide you with a safe, productive college experience. That's why I couldn't be happier to let you know that when you arrive on campus for the fall semester, you will live and learn in a place that will look and feel like the college experience you're expecting. This fall, weβre returning to full, in-person instruction.
Improving COVID-19 trends and increasing access to vaccines have allowed us to begin making plans to return to a vibrant, bustling campus where the virtual world will be replaced mainly by the face-to-face interactions we've collectively craved as a University.
The pandemic challenged campus to innovate and find new ways to keep students, faculty and staff safe while staying true to our promise to provide the academic and social experience people expect and deserve. It was a heavy task, but I believe we came together and accomplished more than we thought we could. A common bond that unites all Binghamton students is that they are resilient. This year, that characteristic was needed to prevail. I am proud of you and the work you've put in to get through this.
In-person classes are the crux of what we do and are an integral part of our learning environment. We know that students do better when they are in class and living among their friends. Therefore, we are planning that you'll be able to interact meaningfully with your friends in our residential communities, learn from distinguished faculty in a traditional classroom setting and enjoy our many extracurricular activities.
COVID-19 disrupted everything we took for granted, but the Binghamton spirit remains strong. Now, we look forward to returning to a robust, in-person experience. However, as it has been throughout the pandemic, our University community's safety is our priority. Our decisions will always be grounded in science and we will follow the expert guidance of our local, state and national public health leaders.
After a year of social distancing, Zoom classes and remote learning, Iβm certain that I speak for all of us in saying βI canβt wait to get back to normal!β At Binghamton, this means in-person classes and a vibrant and exciting campus life. But most of all, it means having you on campus, where you will experience the intellectually challenging, leadership-enhancing and culturally-engaging environment that only Binghamton can offer. I canβt wait to see you this fall!
Sincerely,
Harvey G. Stenger
President
