Pure Michigan!

Michigan has plenty of unusual bragging rights, but this one may be the most perfectly Michigan of all: the state is home to the world’s only floating post office.

Yes, a post office. On a boat.

Because apparently in Michigan, even the mail sometimes needs lake legs.

It is one of those facts that sounds made up until you see the boat sitting there, looking like a regular working vessel that just happens to belong to the postal system. And honestly, if any state was going to figure out how to combine boats and mail delivery, Michigan feels like the obvious choice.

We are surrounded by water. We measure summer by lake days, weekend plans by which direction gets us closer to a shoreline, and weather by what the Great Lakes decide to do next.

So naturally, we also have a post office that floats.

There is something wonderfully practical about it, too. Michigan has always been a place where water is not just scenery. It is part of how people travel, work, live, and connect communities.

That makes a floating post office feel less like a novelty and more like one more example of Michigan adapting to the geography that defines it.

Most states have post offices tucked inside brick buildings.

Michigan looked at all that water and apparently said, “We can work with this.”

It is the kind of odd little Michigan fact that makes lifelong residents smile and gives anyone who moved away another reason to explain their home state to confused friends.

Only in Michigan could “the mail boat” be an actual government service instead of something your uncle made up at deer camp.

A true jewel of Detroit!❤️

The fence around the Scott Fountain comes down this month. Belle Isle's marble fountain has been closed since May 2025 for a $6 million restoration, and the work is due to finish Sept. 30.

Crews replaced failing plumbing, poured new concrete support beams, sealed the basin and repaired the white marble. All of it was paid for with federal American Rescue Plan money, and the Sept. 30 finish is the deadline attached to those dollars.

The fountain was dedicated in 1925 and designed by Cass Gilbert.
