One of the many unique features about this home built in 1923, is that it has 8 wood burning fireplaces.

All eight fireplaces have ash drops for cleaning from below, and all eight have dampers.

Every one is different. The three most ornate are in the drawing room, dining room, and master bedroom.

The solarium’s is stone with a granite mantel. The remaining bedroom fireplaces are more tailored. The largest is in the billiard room in the basement, with a single massive timber as part of the mantel.

When the architectural historian who prepared its National Register nomination described the property they wrote, it survives in essentially original condition. A photograph taken of the house shortly after completion for the 1923 edition of “Art Work, of Birmingham Ala.” could have been taken yesterday.

The rarest thing about this house… not its size, though it’s large. Not it stone, though the stone is extraordinary. What is rare is that a century of owners hasn’t changed it.

The original brass hardware is still on the doors the push button light plates still work. The plaster is still covered in canvas. The pedestal sinks, the ceramic tile, the sconces and the chandeliers. The ornamental radiator covers - original. Nobody gutted this house in 1978. Nobody opened up the floor plan in 2004.
