Thinking about planting a boulevard tree this year? 🌳
A well-chosen tree can provide shade, improve curb appeal, help reduce stormwater runoff, and even increase property values over time. In Bismarck, homeowners can plant approved trees in the boulevard area between the sidewalk and street, but a permit is required before planting. The good news? The permit is free, and the City's Partners in Planting program may reimburse up to 50% of your tree cost, up to $100 per tree and $700 per property.
Not sure what to plant? Some trees that perform well in our area include Bur Oak, Hackberry, Kentucky Coffeetree, American Linden, disease-resistant Elm varieties, Serviceberry, and several hardy lilacs. The best choice depends on your boulevard width, overhead utilities, soil conditions, and how much space you have.
A few things to remember:
✅ Obtain a boulevard planting permit before planting.
✅ Choose a tree approved for your boulevard width.
✅ Plant at the proper depth.
✅ Keep mowers and string trimmers away from the trunk.
✅ Ash trees are not allowed on Bismarck boulevards due to Emerald Ash Borer concerns.
