Before the arrival of white settlers, present-day central North Dakota was inhabited by the Mandan Native American tribe. The Hidatsa name of Bismarck is mirahacii arumaaguash; the Arikara name is ituhtaáwe. In 1872 the future capital city was founded at what was then called Missouri Crossing, so named because the Lewis and Clark Expedition crossed the river there. The new town was called Edwinton, after Edwin Ferry Johnson (1803–1872), engineer-in-chief for the Northern Pacific Railway. In 1873, however, the Northern Pacific Railway renamed the city Bismarck, in honor of German chancellor Otto von Bismarck, in hopes of attracting German investment. The discovery of gold in the nearby Black Hills the following year was the real impetus for growth. Bismarck became a freight-shipping center on the “Custer Route” from the Black Hills. The area that is present-day Fargo was an early stopping point for steamboats traversing the Red River during the 1870s and 1880s. The city was originally named “Centralia,” but was later renamed “Fargo” after Northern Pacific Railway director and Wells Fargo Express Company founder William Fargo (1818−1881). Annual West Fargo events include: Big Iron, Bonanzaville Pioneer Days, Nite to Unite, Red River Valley Fair, West Fargo Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, West Fargo Shakers’ New Year’s Eve Party, and West Fest. Big Iron, an annual event located at the West Fargo Fairgrounds, features farm equipment and over 900 exhibit booths. Over 87,000 attendees took part in the three-day Big Iron in 2013. Bonanzaville Pioneer Days includes a parade, food, demonstrations, and tours Nite to Unite, hosted by the West Fargo Police Department, is an annual community summer event. Past activities have included: Police, Fire, FM Ambulance, and Military demonstrations; free food; face painting; mascots; and community service display booths. Red River Valley Fair includes entertainment, arts and crafts shows, livestock, fireworks, and a petting zoo. The West Fargo Public Library hosts its Summer Reading Program to encourage reading for children, teens, and adults. The West Fargo Shakers holds an annual New Year’s Eve Party on December 31, all proceeds benefit the Back Pack Program.
