Minnesota home owners paying a whopping $873 million more in property taxes this year vs last year. We're sure that every penny will go to proactive, responsible uses that benefit the communities in Minnesota😒 It is the opinion of the Helmers Group that you should allow assessors to view your property so you are taxed correctly.
If you are hiding additions, etc. they will see it in your MLS listing if you sell the home, Karen or Ken next door decides to narc on you, they even fly drones over your home looking for decks, sheds, patios, pools, etc.
Having correct permits pulled for work completed and properly taxed homes benefits all current and future homeowners. Letting Assessors "Guess" cannot be a good thing for anyone.
Suggestions for when the Assessor visits.
* Remain calm and don't be rude regardless about how you feel about property taxes.
* Do not discuss any income generating activities occurring on property. (Renting bedroom, selling foods from home, selling eggs or vegetables from garden, etc.)
* Place all valuables, credit cards, sensitive documents, etc. away and out of sight preferably locked up.
* Offer them something to drink(water, coffee, etc.) kindness can't hurt when they estimate your value😊
* Cover or remove guns, gun safes, etc. In a state like Minnesota, you never know what other data they are being forced to collect unrelated to the basic property evaluation.
* Do point out older aging items like roof, siding, old garages, etc.
