Important Tip for Homeowners: Switch to Emergency Heat When Temperatures Drop Below Freezing ❄️
As a home inspector, I frequently get questions about thermostat settings during cold weather. When the temperature drops below freezing, it’s a good idea to switch your thermostat to Emergency Heat (or Auxiliary Heat) if you have a heat pump system.
Here’s why:
• Heat Pumps are designed to be efficient in moderate temperatures, but when it gets extremely cold, they struggle to keep up.
• Emergency Heat activates the backup heating system (usually electric heat) to ensure your home stays warm and prevents pipes from freezing.
• Prevents Overworking: Running the heat pump in extremely cold conditions can put unnecessary strain on the system, potentially leading to breakdowns or higher energy costs.
