Yes, it’s Boxelder Bug season!
While these small half-inch long bugs are harmless, feeding on the leaves and flowers of boxelder, maple and ash trees, they are a nuisance!
They don’t bite or destroy structures, but when threatened they can secrete a fluid that stains walls, carpets, and other surfaces.
Boxelders serve a purpose in our ecosystem. They contribute to the food chain, offering themselves as dinner for birds, spiders and other insects.
Boxelders also contribute to the decomposition process - returning nutrients to the soil as they breakdown organic matter as they feed.
Boxelders are also considered an “indicator” insect. Scientists use them to determine the health of the ecosystem. Any changes in population or behavior can signal something is wrong!
Although you can call out pest control to treat for these unwanted friends, a simple solution of water and dish soap together in a water bottle are a quick fix for these pesky guys!
