Bloomington gets a fair amount of rain each year, and while it’s not the most exciting homeowner topic… rainy days are actually the best time to spot drainage issues before they turn into costly water intrusion problems. I think about this every time it rains!

A few things to check during or right after a heavy rain:

Are your gutters overflowing instead of carrying water away?

Are downspouts draining several feet away from the foundation?

Is water pooling near your home?

Are splash blocks buried or shifted?

Do you notice muddy areas, erosion, or standing water?

Are window wells or walkout basement areas collecting water?

Do you hear dripping behind gutters or see water running down siding?

Simple maintenance can prevent major headaches later, especially in basements and crawl spaces. This is the time of year when home inspections reveal all the water issues!

A few easy prevention tips:

Clean gutters regularly

Extend downspouts away from the home

Keep grading sloped away from the foundation

Check sump pumps before storm season

Trim landscaping blocking drainage paths

Sometimes the rain tells you exactly where the problem is, you just have to look while it’s happening.
