Radon — a silent but serious health risk in Minnesota and the Midwest.
Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the natural breakdown of uranium and thorium in rocks and soil. It seeps into the air — and yes, it’s quite common in Minnesota’s ground.
Any type of soil can have high radon levels. When the concentration is above 4 pCi/L, it’s considered dangerous and a major cause of lung cancer.
In real estate transactions, buyers can often request a radon mitigation system or negotiate the price if high levels are detected.

• Mitigation system installation: $1,200–$2,500
• Inspection test: $150–$200 (takes 2–3 days in the basement)
• DIY kits: $5–$20 (longer testing period, mailed to a lab)
For homeowners, I always recommend testing and installing a mitigation system — it’s usually done within a day.
Adding an air-to-air exchange system can also lower radon levels by about 20–25%.
By Minnesota law, homes built after 2009 are required to include passive radon-resistant systems, meaning the piping is already set — you just need to add a small fan in the attic to make it active.

依明州法規，2009年後建造的房屋必須配有被動式防氡系統，簡單來說就是管線已預先裝好，只要在閣樓加裝一個小風扇，就能啟動成為主動式系統。
