Residents - be sure to have your cars registered.

The days of parking in Hilton Head Island beach lots for free are nearly over. Visitors to the island will now be required to pay for parking at all public beaches except at the town’s most popular beach at Coligny.

Starting March 1, drivers of vehicles without a residency permit will have to spend $3 per hour, with a cap of $15 each day to park their cars at five of the island’s other six public beach lots during the weekdays. On the weekends, visitors will have to pay a flat rate of $20 regardless of how long they visit.

The only continued exception is that Island residents can still receive free parking permits for up to two vehicles per household. Read the details here: bit.ly/4ieGDyy

Here’s more details:

Hilton Head Town Council William Hilton Parkway Gateway Corridor Project Status ("the project") This past June, the Town of Hilton Head entered into an agreement with Beaufort County and gave municipal consent for "The project." Beaufort County responded to the consent agreement in November and split the agreement into two MOA's - one for the Corridor part of the project and one for the Stoney Community Improvement Plan. Following the failure of the Transportation Sales Tax referendum on November 5, 2024, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and the South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank (SCTIB) asked Beaufort County to explain how it intended to fund the 190 million difference between the current $488 million estimated cost of the project and the $298 million in committed funds. The deadline for providing the explanation is March 31, 2025. If a plan is not in place by then, the SCDOT will proceed to replace the existing eastbound bridge over Mackay Creek and the 120 million SCTIB money will be revoked. Senator Davis met with other members of our State Delegation. They have devised a plan for moving forward to be considered by the municipalities and the County. Senator Davis suggested revising the SCTIB and not include the westbound spans of the bridges. Senator Davis and our delegation propose we do the best we can with the funds that we have in place. They propose that the SCDOT and the SIB allocate the committed state funds to build a new three-lane eastbound span from Moss Creek Drive to Windmill Harbor to the south of and parallel to the existing two-lane eastbound span. Once completed the original spans will be removed. The existing two-lane westbound spans are structurally sound with a useful life of 20+years.

Both the Beaufort County Council and the Hilton Head Town Council will be holding public meetings on the project this month. The County will meet on January 21 at the Recreation Center in Bluffton. The Town of Hilton Head will be meeting on January 28 in Chambers. I will provide the times of the meetings once posted.

As we ring in the new year, let’s recap the project for our new followers:

is proposing to make improvements to the US 278 corridor between Bluffton and Hilton Head Island.

The study area spans Moss Creek Drive to Spanish Wells Road.

The purpose of this project is to address structural deficiencies at the existing eastbound MacKay Creek bridge and reduce congestion along US 278.
