When it comes to big game sport fishing in South Florida and the Keys, the Broadbill Swordfish is one of our most prolific species. Daytime Swordfishing in the Gulf Stream was pioneered by the Stanczyk family, the owners and operators of Bud ‘N’ Mary’s Marina in Islamorada, Florida. In Lighthouse Point, RJ Boyle has advanced the techniques for Daytime Swordfishing into a science. His platform, The Crew is an all access pass to local knowledge on the subject. Last Saturday, we were able to land this gladiator of the sea off of Islamorada. A wonderful present for a birthday fishing trip. It’s Blackfin Tuna time in South Florida. These incredibly tasty fish can be caught in depths of 300’ to 90’. Live bait is the preferred technique by flying Goggle Eyes on the kite or flat lining Pilchards on the other side. This fish was caught in the LHPSSA Hat Tournament a few weeks ago. The Florida Keys has one of the best fisheries in the world for Dolphin (Mahi). From late spring through early fall, schools of Dolphin will be offshore between 400’ of water to the Swordfish grounds. Running and gunning from set to set of diving birds is the most effective technique. Over the last decade, our family’s boat the has boated several nice Bull and Cow Dolphin over 40” in total length.
