I like this picture because it’s me with former Massachusetts governor Bill Weld, who is the Republican trying to challenge Trump for the Republican nomination. He’s a really lovely man. And that’s the world as it should be, Republicans and Democrats actually liking each other! As it is, we are in the middle of a cold Civil War in America now. It’s easy to stay in our silos and think it’s OK because we’re basically surrounded by people who think like us, but there’s a rip in the fabric in this country that is very dangerous. When I was growing up, there was more of a sense that we were all different kinds of people. We all knew that there were a lot of other people out there who didn’t think the way that we thought, dress the way we dressed, prayed the way we prayed and so forth. But there was a general sense of goodwill that I can’t quite describe. Maybe it’s that in the absence of social media, we just didn’t even know what other people were thinking or doing so much and so it was easier to just assume it was all OK. But somehow it was friendlier, people were less suspicious of each other in some way. The only thing I’m certain of is that the answer lies within, in all of us committing to a deeper level of kindness and soulful recognition of the beauty in one another – no matter who the other is. Sometimes we feel like we don’t know what we should do with our obstructions to love. We talk about them, we stir them up. And far too often today people justify their withhold of love. But from a spiritual perspective what we’re supposed to do is to surrender those walls to God. Dear God, please take away my judgments, take away my jealousy, take away my envy, take away my anger, take away my fear. When it comes to politics, everyone is so busy judging everyone else these days. It is so toxic. It is so wrong-minded. Pick a person who stands for something you totally disagree with, and pray to see the innocent child of God within them. It will change you. It doesn’t mean you won’t disagree with them anymore. But it will make you part of the revolution of consciousness that alone will save this world.
