I love my daughter more than words can ever explain.

This fight with the school district has been exhausting, but every bit of it comes from one place: love. She is autistic, she is amazing, and she deserves to be safe, understood, respected, and given every chance to thrive.

I don’t fight because I want conflict. I fight because I’m her parent.

And I will never stop standing up for her.

For most of my life, I thought the goal was to fit in.

To be accepted.

To be understood.

To be loved in a way that finally proved I was enough.

But healing has taught me something different.

Maybe God never created me to fit into places that required me to shrink.

Maybe the parts of me I once questioned - my voice, my honesty, my intensity, my empathy, my refusal to stay silent when something feels wrong - were never flaws.

Maybe they were preparation.

My book, Unconditional Self-Love: One Step at a Time, began as a deeply personal journey. It is about identity, grief, fatherhood, faith, trauma, healing, and learning to stop asking others to define my worth.

But lately, I have started to understand that healing does not end with us.

Sometimes healing gives us the courage to speak.

Sometimes self-love becomes advocacy.

Sometimes fighting for your own children opens your eyes to how many other children and families are fighting quietly too.

And that is where I find myself now.

It should not take a former principal, longtime educator, single father, and relentless advocate to make a system listen.

It should not take public pressure for children to receive safety, dignity, documentation, and meaningful access to education.

It should not take this much for parents to be heard.

So maybe this journey is bigger than my family.

Maybe the same voice I once prayed God would change is the voice I am now being called to use.

For my children.

For other children.

For families who feel overwhelmed, dismissed, or alone.

For every child who deserves to be seen, protected, supported, and loved without conditions.

I do not know exactly where this path leads.

But I know this:

The love we spend our lives searching for often begins the moment we stop asking others to define our worth.

And once we know our worth, we stop begging for permission to stand in truth.

One step at a time.

Join me for a School Board meeting.

For those who do not know me, my name is Brian Shaffer-Wicks. I am a Broward County parent, longtime educator, and now a parent advocate. I spent more than 20 years in education as a teacher, teacher leader, assistant principal, and principal. I understand schools from the inside, and I also understand what it feels like to be a parent trying to get meaningful answers for your children.

On Tuesday morning, I am registered to speak at the Broward County School Board meeting regarding serious concerns involving special education, student safety, records, and meaningful access to education.

Over the past several days, my children have missed four school days while I have continued asking Broward County Public Schools for a substantive District-level response, interim instruction/tutoring, appropriate supports, and a meaningful plan forward. I have also shared my draft statement with District leadership and the School Board in advance because I believe in being transparent, direct, and fair.

This is not about attacking individual educators or staff members. It is about accountability, access, transparency, and making sure families are not left alone when systems fail to respond meaningfully.

The meeting is currently listed for Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 8:45 a.m. at the KCW Administration Center, 600 S.E. Third Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. BCPS also streams School Board meetings live.

If you are able, please consider tuning in, following along, or simply keeping my children and all families navigating similar issues in your thoughts and prayers.

I appreciate everyone who has reached out publicly and privately. Your support means more than you know.
