Somewhere around the 1860s or 1870s, a photographer captured this moment on the land that would one day become George’s Ranch.
A whitewashed limestone homestead. Mature live oaks casting shade over a packed-dirt yard. A horse-drawn buggy waiting at the gate. Two women standing in the doorway, one pausing, one watching, going about the quiet rhythms of a Hill Country afternoon. A man seated in the carriage, perhaps just arriving, perhaps just about to leave.
This is the original homestead on the George Wilkins Kendall ranch in Boerne, Texas. It is the same land where Kendall, Texas Ranger, war correspondent, co-founder of The New Orleans Picayune, and the man for whom Kendall County is named, built his life after the frontier. Here, he raised his family, ran one of the first successful sheep ranches in Texas, and left behind a legacy that endures.
More than a century later, the homestead still stands on this property, along with some of the trees that have watched over this land for generations. The historic house will be thoughtfully repurposed, preserving a tangible connection between Kendall’s story and the community now taking shape around it.
The setting has changed, but its spirit remains. The land, the home, and the history are still here, ready for their next chapter.
