A significant freeze is expected for the San Antonio area this weekend through Monday, with temperatures dropping below freezing for extended periods. To help prevent damage to your home, plumbing, and landscaping here are some helpful tips:
Protect Your Plumbing
To reduce the risk of frozen or burst pipes:
- Allow interior faucets to drip (especially those on exterior walls). A slow, steady drip is sufficient.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warmer air to circulate around pipes.
- Disconnect all outdoor hoses from hose bibs.
- Cover and insulate all exterior hose bibs/outdoor faucets.
- Do not leave exterior faucets dripping.
- Keep your home heated to at least 55°F, even if you are away.
- If your home will be vacant for an extended period, consider shutting off the water supply and draining the lines.
Protect Plants & Landscaping
- Cover sensitive plants with frost cloth, sheets, blankets, or burlap.
- Ensure coverings extend to the ground to trap warmth.
- Secure covers so they do not blow away.
- Remove coverings once temperatures rise above freezing.
- Move potted plants indoors or into a garage if possible.
- Avoid plastic touching plant leaves, as it may cause damage.
Pets & Personal Safety
- Bring pets indoors or provide warm, insulated shelter with unfrozen water.
- Use caution on walkways and driveways, as freezing conditions may cause slippery surfaces.
