PSA - As temperatures continue to rise, we wanted to share a few quick reminders regarding AC usage and summer cooling expectations!

For two story homes with only one AC unit, it is very normal for the upstairs to run warmer than the downstairs since heat naturally rises.

A few recommended thermostat guidelines during the summer are:

• Daytime while home: approximately 72–75°
• Nighttime (especially if sleeping upstairs): approximately 68–72°
• Away from home: approximately 78–80°

There are also a few things you can do that make a very big difference in overall cooling performance:

• Slightly close downstairs vents (not fully) and keep upstairs vents fully open to help push more airflow upstairs
• Keep the thermostat fan setting on “Auto” rather than “On” unless continuous circulation is needed
• Run ceiling fans whenever possible
• Keep blinds or blackout curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day

Another important rule of thumb is that most residential AC systems are designed to cool a home approximately 20 degrees lower than the outdoor temperature. For example:

• If it is 95° outside, maintaining around 75° inside is considered normal
• If it is 100° outside, most systems may realistically maintain around 78–80°
• If it is 85° outside, maintaining 72–75° is generally much easier for most systems

This does not mean you cannot set the thermostat lower, however when trying to maintain very large temperature differences during extreme heat, the system may run continuously and struggle to keep up.

Additionally, lowering the thermostat drastically all at once can sometimes cause systems to freeze up, especially during very hot weather. For example, setting the thermostat from 78° directly down to 65° may overwork the system and freeze the coils. It is always best to lower temperatures gradually.

As a general comfort guide:

• 72–74° = Comfort focused
• 75–78° = Balanced comfort and efficiency
• 78–80° = Energy saving mode
