Leadership Boise Session #9: HEALTHCARE
I have recently had several firsthand encounters with the US healthcare industry. For this reason, I was particularly interested in this topic. Judging by the high degree of audience engagement during this session, I suspect that I am not alone.
My takeaways:
- Idaho ranks last in the US in the number of physicians per capita
- In government-subsidized healthcare programs, healthcare costs for healthy individuals are expensive to account for individuals with more healthcare expenses
- One potential solution to high healthcare costs: incentivize prevention, not treatment
- Similarly, on the subject of homelessness: reactive services cost more than dollars invested in preventative measures
- One of the best ways for government to combat housing unaffordability: empower private developers to build more housing (reduce red tape, loosen zoning code, etc.)
- A description of American healthcare: “Exceptional doctors and care, mired in bureaucracy and costs”
Thank you to all the companies and organizations who contributed to this session, including Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, The Idaho Foodbank, Saint Alphonsus, Boise Police Department, City of Boise, Terry Reilly Health Services, Hawley Troxell, St. Luke's Medical Center, and more.
