This is shocking! The rate of married 30-year olds buying a home has plummeted since 1990. This is not just affordability, this is lack of foresight. We Realtors need to do a better job teaching about the benefits of home ownership. Young people have missed out on huge equity gains on the best long term investment- building equity tax-free up to $500k. Renting and investing elsewhere just does not compare over the long run. If you know someone who needs to buy a home, have them contact me for help making a plan to achieve the dream.
This graph really tells a story: estimate percentage of U.S. adults who are both married and own a home by age 30.
Those of you who have kids or grandkids in that age bracket -- what do you hear from them? Housing costs? Wedding costs? Costs of having kids? Not interested in the responsibilities of home ownership? A combination of those and more?
What do you think has changed generationally?
