UPDATE for Septic System Owners: The Tuscarawas County Health Department would like to provide some clarification regarding our Operation and Maintenance inspection requirements. We have received questions from the community about when inspections need to be completed. We have heard that homeowners think they need to have their inspection and maintenance completed within 30 days of receiving their letter. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. When a service provider services and inspects your septic system, they are required to submit the report to TCHD within 30 days of service.

The 5-year permit period begins on January 1, 2024, so homeowners do not need to have their inspections completed before December 31. They should wait until after January 1, 2024, to have service/inspection completed for the inspection to count for this 5-year permit cycle.

In January 2015, the Ohio Department of Health adopted new rules regarding private Sewage Treatment Systems (STSs) in Ohio (Ohio Administrative Code (OAC) 3701-29-09(I)). These new rules mandate that all health districts in the state develop and implement a local Operation & Maintenance program to ensure all systems in their jurisdiction are monitored for regular maintenance and proper function. Regular maintenance of your system will extend its life, safeguard your investment, protect your health, preserve surface and ground waters, and prevent sewage nuisance conditions on your property.
