***Insurance Tip of the Week*** - Debunking Auto Insurance Myths

Common sense is only sometimes that common! As such, here are some of the myths about auto insurance that are actually believed:

Myth #1 - Vehicle color can determine the price of auto insurance.

The color has nothing to do with the rate. The make and model of your vehicle will certainly factor in.

Myth #2 - It costs more to insure your car as you age.

Older drivers actually have many opportunities to save on their premiums. Those over 55 may be eligible for a discount if they complete accident prevention courses. Additionally, there are carriers with niche offerings for those 55+ clients.

Myth #3 - Your credit has no effect on your insurance rate.

Your credit-based 'insurance score' is derived from your credit history, and it does matter. This tells how well you manage your financial affairs and is shown to be a good predictor of whether someone is more likely to file an insurance claim. People with good credit and insurance scores often end up paying less for insurance.

Myth #4 - Your insurance will cover you if your car is stolen, vandalized, or damaged by falling tree limbs, hail, flood, or fire.

Even if this seems obvious, some folks believe that simply having insurance means they are automatically covered for damage to their car. However, you have to actually opt for the comprehensive and collision coverage on your policy.

Myth #5 - You only need the state legal minimum amount of liability coverage.

Purchasing NC and SC state minimum limits will keep you legal but can be exhausted quickly, leaving you personally exposed to significantly paying out of pocket. More drivers are on the road today and just staying legal, so reviewing your Under-Insured Motorist and Un-Insured Motorist Coverages is essential so you don't have to seek restitution from those drivers personally.

Unfortunately, insurance can be complicated and very much misunderstood. Don't worry about how everyone else is covering themselves...
