Had this sent in from a client today that I’ve been helping with wildlife management objectives on a property he purchased from myself. He has had multiple pictures of hens with poults this year that I have absolutely loved seeing! I love seeing when a clients plans are working!

But this picture screams something I’ve said over and over again for years and years. Habitat trumps all, and if you don’t leave at least one longbeard on your farm every year (preferably more) and kill them all every year, your population is 100% going to decline.

This is a very late hatch, possibly her 3rd nest. We knew at least one longbeard made it on the farm through season, and this hen after loosing her nest went back out and seeked that gobbler and was rebred and bam! She hatched out some poults that are now in the flight stage and have a way better chance of successfully surviving to adult hood!

The take away is, jakes shoot blanks, if you’re banking on leaving just jakes to do the gobblers job, your population will decline, especially if you aren’t actively working on nest habitat and predator trapping. Leave a long beard for the hens that don’t win the first time and they may the second or third like this ole girl did!
