As a Texas Affordable Housing Specialist, I honor our past and present leaders on their everlasting fight for affordable housing! I am an avid advocate of the on workforce housing programs, FHA lending, and affordable housing, enabling the underserved buyers in Texas, as well as, my native state of Louisiana! It’s only FAIR✨
This , we honor the Housing Justice Leaders whose courage, moral clarity, and conviction have transformed the fight for fair and equitable housing in America.
We uplift Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose leadership in the Civil Rights Movement and activism for dignity, opportunity, and equality laid a moral foundation for the fair housing movement. We are reminded that the nation found the resolve to pass the Fair Housing Act of 1968 not during Dr. King's life—but seven days after his untimely murder. We continue his fight today.
We celebrate the extraordinary legacy of Mrs. Lee Porter, the “Mother of Fair Housing,” a pioneering civil rights leader, NFHA founding Board Member, and longtime Executive Director of the Fair Housing Council of Northern New Jersey. She was a relentless advocate who organized “straw person” home purchases and broke down racial barriers before passage of the Fair Housing Act. She unquestionably reshaped the national housing landscape. She helped build the Fair Housing Initiatives Program, strengthened fair housing groups nationwide, and mentored generations of civil rights leaders. May her legacy live long in our hearts.
We also honor Congresswoman Maxine Waters, a modern champion for housing justice whose leadership has been central to advancing affordable housing, addressing discriminatory practices like appraisal bias, and closing the racial homeownership gap. Her decades of public service continue to drive policy reforms and expose inequities in America’s housing system.
These leaders, along with countless advocates, researchers, policymakers, and community organizers, have moved us closer to a nation where every person has access to a safe, affordable home free from discrimination.
There is more work to be done. But as we stand on the shoulders of these civil rights giants, we know it is achievable.
This month and always, NFHA recommits to carrying forward their legacy of justice, opportunity, and fighting for fair and affordable housing.
