If you own a home in the City of Boston and live in it as your primary residence, here’s one I don’t want you to miss: the residential tax exemption.

It lowers the taxable value of your home, which means a lower property tax bill, but it isn’t automatic. You have to apply for it. I’ve had clients skip this simply because nobody told them it existed, and that’s money left on the table every single year.

If Boston is home and this is the house you actually live in, not a rental or a second property, check with the Assessing Department to make sure you’re on file. It’s a quick step that pays off every tax cycle.

Save this and double check you’re taking advantage of it.

Living in South Boston definitely comes with a few things you either learn to love or learn to complain about with the rest of us. 😉

And honestly, half the fun is knowing exactly what people mean when they mention the line at Sullivan’s on Castle Island, the one that never seems to move, but you wait in anyway.

It might not make sense to everyone, but if you live here, you probably wouldn’t trade most of it anyway.

Relocating to the Boston area this fall? A few things to note 👇🏻

Trash pickup isn’t consistent across the city, it changes neighborhood by neighborhood, and some surrounding towns don’t offer municipal pickup at all, so you may end up arranging (and paying for) private hauling yourself.

Planning to park on the street in Boston? You’ll need to register for a resident parking sticker through the city first.

And before you sign anything, confirm the heat actually works. You don’t want to find out it’s broken once winter hits.

Save this so it’s ready for move-in day, and send it to anyone relocating to Massachusetts this season.
