Why are Boston buildings particularly in the South bend being constantly repointed? The answer may lie in incorrect mortar.

For soft bricks, use a lime putty mortar or Type O or Type K mortar because it is soft, flexible, and porous, unlike the harder, less breathable, and moisture-trapping Portland cement mortars which can damage historic soft brick. The mortar must be softer than the brick to prevent damage and allow the building to move and dry properly, which is crucial for the longevity of soft brick structures.
Why Portland Cement is Harmful to Soft Brick
Too Hard:
Portland cement creates a strong, hard mortar that is more resistant than soft bricks, causing the bricks to spall (chip or flake) over time.
Traps Moisture:
Portland cement is dense and does not allow moisture to escape, which leads to dampness and can dissolve the softer lime mortar over time.
Lack of Flexibility:
Portland cement does not accommodate the natural expansion and contraction of historic buildings as well as lime mortar.
