Why I’m Starting Marginalia on Substack

The Marginalia is a home for the in-between thoughts, the ideas that don’t arrive fully formed, the stories that reveal themselves while you’re working them out, and the observations you make when you’re paying attention instead of chasing certainty. It’s less about having the final answer and more about asking better questions....

Boulder is brimming with creativity, yet too often that energy remains confined to silos — scattered studios, one-off events, and bursts of activity that fade without continuity. ArtLink Commons is a collaboration between Boulder Community Media and Distributive Creative, two 501(c)3 organizations. ArtLink is designed to complement, not compete with, existing resources....

Dogs or cats? I didn’t choose the cat life, the cat life chose me. Specifically, a fluffy Siberian Forest was wandering down Colfax Avenue in Denver like some kind of mystical furball hitchhiker. Six months earlier, I’d climbed off my deathbed (yes, the actual kind with the dramatic lighting and everything), and apparently, the universe thought, “What this guy needs now is a four-legged enigma with a regal tail and zero regard for human schedules.”...

When I was nearly swept away in the 1976 Big Thompson Flood, it wasn’t planning that saved me—it was luck, instinct, and a floating porta-potty.

Today, Texas is underwater again. Nature doesn’t care about predictions. But floods have a strange way of washing away the walls we build between each other—and reminding us what really matters.

My memoir, Views from Beyond Metropolis, tells that story and many others like it—moments when crisis revealed unexpected connections and the quiet power of human resilience. It’s also a guide for how we can start bridging the social, economic, and cultural divides before disaster forces us to.

Every now and then, I seem to have a brush with death—not because I have a death wish, but maybe to remind myself to stay grateful that I’m still on the right side of the grass. The Bible is full o…

Here's a story about retro-fitting abandoned commercial property for lower cost housing.

One of the effects from the Year of the Pandemic has been an accelerated loss of retail businesses from our urban and suburban landscape. As discount and online stores grow in favor, demand for large retail chains likely will decrease and leave more commercial vacancies. While some top brands may mo...

Sure, this project is more affordable than most in Boulder, but the reason we’re such big proponents of cohousing is because the community formed is a hedge against isolation and loneliness.

Cohousing communities and their residents are well equipped to deal with crisis situations, such as the current COVID-19 / Coronavirus prevention measures. One thing I’ve learned over the yea…
