Wherever there is distress, there will be scammers. So this warning from Boulder County Public Health should come as no surprise. Beware of calls from people claiming to be contact tracing for COVID-19, especially if they ask for credit card info to purchase a virus test.

A new normal. I noticed a lot more activity at Boulder merchants today. However, regulations limiting occupancy left customers waiting in lines outside stores such as REI. And social distancing rules stifled much of the normal banter that accompanies such inconveniences. Looks kind of lonely. Thank goodness for cell phones!

It is good to see local businesses opening again, even if services are scaled back and new "social distancing" rules are a nuisance. This photo was made at Spruce Confections on Broadway in North Boulder. Let's support Boulder's small, locally-owned businesses during this difficult time of COVID-19. And let's show some patience when front line workers enforce the necessary inconveniences.

The long-awaited Boulder Armory redevelopment is starting to take shape, if only in the more-or-less two-dimensions involving street layouts and building foundations.

The fully-envisioned three-dimensional project promises around 200 new market-rate rental apartments and townhouses.

In that third dimension, renovation work has begun on the old Colorado National Guard mess hall. It will become a 9,500 square foot activity center.

The project, creatively dubbed "The Armory," also will include 8,400 square feet of retail space and two public pocket parks.

Unfortunately, the enterprise is something less than the more exciting proposal presented to the public several years ago by Boulder developers Bruce Dierking and Jim Loftus.

Most notably missing is the large arts space that would have been a great addition to North Boulder.

Blame who you would for this and other omissions. (Perhaps you might ask Boulder city planners what they think?)

Dierking and Loftus remain minority investors. Pollack Shores Real Estate Group, Atlanta, GA, is now primary developer for the nine-acre, $90 million project at 4750 Broadway.

A proposal to close some Boulder street lanes to car traffic for walkers and bikers did not get an exceptionally positive response recently. So, what do you think about closing lanes to help restaurants and other businesses hit by the COVID-19 crisis? Cincinnati is trying exactly this. (See link below.)

Boulder City Councilmember Junie Joseph posted the following to the Council Hotline this morning:

"Summer is fast approaching and we are considering closing down streets for restaurants, which I support. During Tuesday's Council meeting we should consider adding retailers to the mix, whereas retailers get to utilize the space in front of their business."
