The Storm Is Here — What to Do If Your Property Sustains Damage
The coastal storm is now impacting Southern New England, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, coastal flooding and dangerous surf to portions of Massachusetts and the surrounding region.
With saturated ground and strong northeast winds continuing through the weekend, downed trees, power outages, water intrusion and property damage remain possible.
If your home or property sustains damage, remember a few important steps:
* Safety comes first. Stay away from downed wires, unstable trees, standing water and damaged areas that may be unsafe.
* Document the damage. When it is safe, take clear photos and video before cleanup or repairs begin.
* Protect the property from further damage. Take reasonable temporary measures when safe to do so.
* Keep your records. Save receipts, invoices and documentation for emergency repairs, mitigation and cleanup.
* Don’t throw damaged property away prematurely. Your insurance company may need an opportunity to inspect it.
* Keep track of communications with your insurance company, adjusters, contractors and mitigation companies.
Most importantly, stay safe and don’t put yourself at risk to inspect or document damage while dangerous conditions are ongoing.
