Yet another study is shining a light on the damage rent control would cause to homeowners across the state. Released earlier this month by the Fiscal Alliance Foundation, the new study found that rent control would increase property taxes for the median single-family home by $312.

At a time when people across the state are grappling with high costs, rent control would cause additional financial burdens and do nothing to fix our housing crisis.

Activists pushing a 2026 rent control ballot measure talk a lot about “corporate landlords,” but there is no language explicitly directed to “corporate landlords” in their proposal, nor does the word “corporate” appear even once in the ballot question language. In fact, if this ballot question passes, a person who owns a multifamily home and rents it out will be treated the same as a Wall Street hedge fund with 10,000 apartments.

Failed rent control policies have a proven track record of harming cities by discouraging new construction and decreasing the existing rental supply. When developers and owners are unable to fund necessary maintenance, everyone loses.
