June was a busy month at Retirement Housing Foundation's Capitol Towers!

Residents celebrated America’s 250th anniversary with an ice cream social, a community conversation about what America means to them, and patriotic rock painting for the Pride Rock garden. Undergraduate students UConn conn also provided a body mechanics and fall-prevention demonstration focused on balance, strength, and safe movement.

Capitol Towers also recognized National Smile Awareness Week with dental health education and plenty of fun smiles. hosted a strength-building exercise class using bands, loops, and mini-balls, followed by a healthy breakfast and raffle prizes.

Later, UConn students returned for “Bingo with a Purpose,” combining fall-prevention education with games, prizes, and a pizza lunch for 48 residents.

Even during the heat wave, residents kept their hand-planted community garden blooming beautifully!

Summer is sweeter when communities come together! ☀️

At Riverside Towers in Medford, a community partnership between Schochet and , residents welcomed Cheryl from MedMinder, who spent time in the lobby answering questions about medication management services, including pill dispensers, automatic refills, bubble packs, home delivery, and monthly check-ins. Residents also enjoyed ice cream, popsicles, and watermelon during an early Fourth of July celebration.

At Retirement Housing Foundation's Seabury Heights in Worcester, residents showed why they are known for both good food and big hearts. As the community’s lengthy renovation begins to wrap up, residents hosted an outdoor picnic lunch to thank the contractors who have worked on-site for more than a year. The kindness, courtesy, and hard work of the tradespeople, under the direction of , have made a lasting impression.

From sharing helpful resources to showing appreciation over a great meal, these moments reflect the kindness and community spirit found throughout Schochet communities.

As we celebrate America250, we're taking a moment to reflect on what makes our communities so special: the people who call them home.

We asked residents of Shepherd Park, a Retirement Housing Foundation community managed by Shochet, one simple question:

"What does living in this country mean to you?"

Their answers are thoughtful, heartfelt, and as unique as the individuals who shared them. Together, they paint a picture of the many experiences, values, and hopes that make up our community.

We hope you'll enjoy hearing their perspectives.

At Schochet, we believe a home is about more than four walls. It's about creating communities where people can build connections, pursue opportunities, and feel they belong. This message is just as meaningful today as when we first shared it.

As America celebrates 250 years, we’re sharing reflections from the people who make our communities what they are.

Wanda Morales is a resident of Plumley Village in Worcester, a community managed through a partnership between Schochet and Jonathan Rose Companies, and she is also a participant in the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program.

In her reflection, Wanda talks about the challenges of starting over, returning to college to study Business Administration and Accounting, and working toward a better future through education, perseverance, and resilience.

We’re honored to share Wanda’s words and her story. ❤️🤍💙

Retirement Housing Foundation's Seabury Heights (managed by Schochet) celebrated America’s 250th with good food, great music, and even better company! ❤️🤍💙

More than 200 residents and guests joined us for a delicious BBQ featuring pulled pork sandwiches, BBQ chicken, potato salad, green salad, and cornbread. An ice cream truck stopped by with dessert, while a DJ kept the music going and residents had fun striking a pose in the photo booth.

The Seabury Heights team was so busy enjoying the day with everyone that they only managed to capture a few photos, but what a wonderful celebration it was! Thank you to everyone who joined in the celebration and helped make the day so special.

A sweet story from Riverside Towers, a community managed in partnership by Jonathan Rose Companies and Schochet. 🧶

This year, Hadassah Margolis, a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker who has been leading groups at Riverside Towers, helped connect one of our residents with Welcome Blanket an organization that uses handmade blankets to offer a warm welcome to immigrants and refugees.

Marie, a Riverside Towers resident who also helps lead the building’s weekly crochet group, put her talents to work and donated an incredible eight handmade blankets to the project.

We love seeing the connections that grow within our communities and the generosity of residents like Marie, who use their time and talents to bring warmth and kindness to others.

As America marks 250 years, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what living in this country means to the people who help make our communities what they are.

The answer is different for everyone. It can be found in opportunity, family, sacrifice, community, and the hope of building something better for the generations that follow.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing a few of those perspectives from across the Schochet community. We’re honored to begin with this reflection from Sheila Llamas, one of our Resident Service Coordinators.
