Upgrading your kitchen sink with a modern garbage disposal can dramatically speed up cleanup and reduce waste. Here's a homeowner-friendly, step-by-step guide inspired by Handydads to help you install a new disposal and keep a leak-free, quiet setup. Important: follow your unit's manual and consider hiring a licensed professional for electrical work if you're unsure.

Step 1: Pick a high-torque, quiet disposal. Look for features that handle tough scraps without clogging and keep noise down.
Step 2: Safety first — turn off power at the circuit breaker (and unplug the unit if possible).
Step 3: Remove the old disposal: place a bucket under the trap to catch water, disconnect the unit, and keep the workspace clean.
Step 4: Clean the sink drain area and prep the drain. Scrape away old sealant so the new fl**ge sits flush against the sink.
Step 5: Install the new sink fl**ge: apply a generous ring of plumbers putty around the underside of the fl**ge, press it into the sink opening, then install the fiber gasket, backup ring, and mounting ring. Tighten the bolts evenly until the fl**ge is level and the putty forms a watertight seal. Wipe away excess putty.
Step 6: Prep the disposal: remove the dishwasher knockout plug if your setup has one, and connect the power cord according to the manufacturer diagram. Use a cable clamp to secure the wire.
Step 7: Lift the disposal into place and align the mounting tabs with the ramps on the mounting ring. Turn the mounting ring firmly until the three tabs are fully engaged and locked. You should hear a click when it’s seated and sealed.
Step 8: Connect the discharge tube to the disposal and join it to the P-trap. Ensure gaskets are seated, tighten the slip nuts, reconnect the dishwasher drain, and secure with a hose clamp.
Step 9: Turn on water, test for leaks, and restore power to verify quiet operation.

This upgrade will significantly improve your kitchen efficiency and waste management. For the full step-by-step with photos, visit handydads.net/blog to read the full blog.

Step 2: Prep and safety

- Flush the toilet to drain the tank.

Step 3: Disconnect and seal
- Place the bucket under the fill valve and use the wrench to disconnect the supply line.
- Wrap several layers of plumbers tape around the fill valve threads.

Step 4: Install the valve
- Screw on the T-valve adapter.
- Attach the water supply line to the bottom of the T-valve and the bidet hose to the side outlet.

Step 5: Attach and mount
- Connect the sprayer head to the hose.
- Mount the holster bracket to the side of the tank or the wall.

Step 6: Test and adjust

Overhead garage storage is a game changer. Here’s a practical, step-by-step guide to safely mounting a heavy-duty overhead rack and reclaiming floor space. For the full guide, visit handydads.net/blog.

1) Find the joists: Use a high-quality stud finder to locate ceiling joists. Mark the center of each joist with a pencil. Double-check by tapping a small finishing nail to verify edges.

2) Mark the footprint: Hold the manufacturer template against the ceiling and mark where the lag bolts will go. Make sure these marks align with the joists. Use a straight edge or chalk line to keep things square.

3) Install the brackets: Drill pilot holes in the center of the joists, slightly smaller than the lag bolts. Align brackets and drive in the lag bolts. Use a socket wrench or impact driver and verify each bracket is solid before moving on.

4) Assemble the frame: Attach vertical posts to the brackets and adjust to the desired height. Ensure all corners are the same length and the frame is level. Have a helper hold pieces in place; check that posts don’t interfere with the garage door opener.

5) Mount the shelving: Place the decking or shelves on the beams and secure with clips or screws. Distribute weight evenly and test by giving the unit a firm shake. Start with lighter items.

Tips: Use a laser level for long spans, label bins, group items by type, and re-tighten lag bolts after the first month. Ensure there's enough clearance for the door.

Handydads’ step-by-step guide to installing a bathroom exhaust fan with a built-in humidity sensor will help control moi...
10/05/2026

Handydads’ step-by-step guide to installing a bathroom exhaust fan with a built-in humidity sensor will help control moisture, prevent mold, and protect your walls and ceilings. This is an intermediate project, so plan for a safe, measured approach and read the full blog for details. For the complete read, visit handydads.net/blog.

Step 1 — Plan and prep: Schedule a full afternoon. If you have attic access, plan venting to the exterior through the attic; if not, prepare for side-wall venting. This ensures everything fits and vents properly.

Step 2 — Safety and power: Turn off the bathroom circuit at the main breaker. Use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm the old fan is dead before touching wires. Remove the old cover and disconnect wiring to clear space for the new humidity-sensing model.

Step 3 — Mark and cut opening: If the new fan housing is larger than the old opening, use the template to mark a new ceiling opening. Carefully cut the drywall and clear debris to allow solid mounting.

Step 4 — Mount the fan housing: Secure the new fan housing to ceiling joists using the manufacturer’s screws to ensure a stable mount.

Step 5 — Electrical connections: Connect wires by color code and secure with wire nuts. Make sure connections are tight and safely tucked inside the housing box.

Step 6 — Ducting and sealing: Attach flexible ducting to the fan’s discharge port and seal joints with high-quality foil tape to prevent leaks. Consider insulation for winter months if needed.

Step 7 — Finish and test: Install the decorative cover, restore power, and test the humidity sensor by running a hot shower nearby. Make any sensor adjustments as needed.

From the Toolbox: We once helped a client with mildew only a few months after a renovation. The prior homeowner forgot to run the fan consistently. After installing a humidity-sensing unit, the bathroom stayed dry automatically, protecting wallpaper and improving air quality without manual intervention.

Top 5 Mistakes to Avoid: 1) Using the wrong tape, causing leaks and reduced efficiency. 2) Underestimating the required vent size for the room. 3) Choosing a high-noise model. 4) Venting into an attic without proper housing. 5) Failing to seal gaps between the housing and drywall.

Tool and Material Recommendations: Look for a low-sone fan for quiet operation, an adjustable humidity sensor, high-quality insulated ducting, and UL listing for use over a tub or shower.

Quick Tips and Hacks: Use a cardboard template if one isn’t included, wear safety goggles and a dust mask, use electrical fish tape to pull wires, and test suction with a single sheet of toilet paper once connections are complete.

10/04/2026

Step-by-step guide: Install a window well cover to keep your basement dry and safe. The Handydads team recommends using high-quality polycarbonate for durability and light transmission over cheap plastics. This weekend project is doable for most DIY enthusiasts with basic tools. Safety first: you’ll be working with masonry and power tools. For the full step-by-step details, visit **handydads.net/blog** to read the full blog.

Step 1 — Tools and materials you’ll need:
- Power drill with hammer setting
- Masonry drill bits
- Measuring tape
- Polycarbonate window well cover
- Stainless steel screws and anchors
- Clear outdoor silicone sealant
- Stiff wire brush
- Safety glasses and work gloves

Step 2 — Measure the window well:
Measure width and depth from the outer rim of the well to the foundation wall. Some wells are circular, others rectangular or U-shaped. Choose a cover with a slight overhang to shed water.

Step 3 — Prep the rim:
Clean the rim and foundation wall with a stiff wire brush to remove dirt, rust, or loose concrete. Ensure a smooth surface and check for sharp edges if the well is metal.

Step 4 — Mark and drill pilot holes:
Position the cover, mark where mounting clips or screws will go, and drill pilot holes with the masonry bit. Keep the drill level and blow out dust so anchors seat properly.

Step 5 — Attach and secure the cover:
Install mounting hardware with stainless steel fasteners. Tighten just enough to hold the cover firmly but avoid over-tightening. The cover should sit flush against the wall.

Step 6 — Seal the edges:
Apply a bead of clear outdoor silicone along the edge where the cover meets the foundation. Smooth with a gloved finger and inspect for gaps.

Step 7 — Final check:
Test that the cover is stable and does not rattle. Ensure water will shed away from the foundation.

From the Toolbox: Last summer we helped a home where a family of frogs found a home in an unprotected window well. We removed debris and relocated the frogs before installing the new cover.

Top 5 Mistakes:
1) Buying a cover exactly the same size as the opening without overhang.
2) Using standard wood screws that rust in damp environments.
3) Not ensuring inside removal access for emergencies.
4) Skipping edge cleaning before applying sealant.
5) Not checking slope so water drains away from the home.

Tool and Material Recommendations:
- Sloped polycarbonate cover
- Nylon anchors and stainless steel screws
- 100% silicone caulk
- Reinforced cover for larger egress windows with UV protection

Quick Tips and Hacks:
- Straighten bent metal fl**ges with a hammer on older wells.
- Use clear silicone that matches your foundation color.
- Add a layer of gravel for drainage in deeper wells.
- Clean the cover with mild soap to avoid scratching.
