One of the things I love most about Western North Carolina is how much natural beauty surrounds us every day.

Along the Blue Ridge Parkway here in Transylvania County, the forests are filled with red maple, sugar maple, American beech, yellow birch, tulip poplar, sourwood, white oak, hickory, hemlock, white pine, red spruce, and so many other native trees that make this area feel special in every season.

In spring and summer, the Parkway is lush and green. In fall, the hardwoods put on an unforgettable color show. And year-round, the mix of creekside trees, evergreens, and mountain forests is a reminder of why life in Western North Carolina is so unique.

🎣 The Trout Streams of Western North Carolina

One of the many treasures of living in Western North Carolina is the incredible fishing found in our mountain rivers and streams. Some of the most pristine waters in the Southeast flow right through our region, including the beautiful Davidson River in Pisgah National Forest.

These cold, clear waters are home to several species of trout, including Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, and the native Brook Trout, often called "Specks" by local anglers. Whether you're an experienced fly fisherman or simply enjoy spending time outdoors, there's something special about watching a trout rise in a mountain stream surrounded by the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The abundance of wildlife, outdoor recreation, and natural beauty is one of the reasons so many people choose to call Western North Carolina home.

Did you know the French Broad River, which flows through Western North Carolina, is believed to be one of the oldest rivers in the world? This ancient river is so old that dinosaurs once walked along its shores millions of years ago. Long before the Appalachian Mountains rose around it, the French Broad was already carving its way across the landscape.

Today, it remains one of our region's greatest natural treasures, offering beautiful scenery, outdoor recreation, and a fascinating connection to the distant past. Living near the French Broad River is a reminder that we are surrounded by incredible natural history and the timeless beauty that makes Western North Carolina such a wonderful place to call home.

The Art Loeb Trail is one of those places that reminds you why people fall in love with Western North Carolina.

Located just a few miles from Brevard, this 30.1-mile point-to-point trail winds through some of the most rugged and beautiful terrain in Pisgah National Forest. It is known for steep climbs, sweeping mountain views, quiet forest sections, and those unforgettable high-elevation balds that make you stop, catch your breath, and say, “This is why we live here.”

This trail is best suited for experienced hikers and backpackers, but even knowing it is right here in our backyard says so much about life in Brevard. Outdoor adventure is never far away.

Whether you are drawn here for the trails, the views, the small-town charm, or the mountain lifestyle, Brevard has a way of making you feel at home.

Living in Transylvania County means we get to enjoy some of the most beautiful forests, trails, waterfalls, and mountain views in Western North Carolina.

It also means we share this incredible place with wildlife, including black bears.

Black bears are a common part of life here, from deep inside Pisgah National Forest to the edges of our neighborhoods. While bear attacks are rare, it is always important to be smart, respectful, and safe when you are spending time outdoors.

A few good reminders:

Give bears plenty of space.
Never approach or feed a black bear.
Make noise on the trail so you do not surprise one.
Keep children close and dogs leashed.
Carry bear spray where appropriate and know how to use it.
If you see a bear, stay calm, back away slowly, and do not run.

Most black bears want to avoid people. The goal is to keep them wild, keep ourselves safe, and continue enjoying the natural beauty that makes Transylvania County such a special place to call home.

Bridal Veil Falls is one of those places in DuPont State Recreational Forest that feels like it belongs on a postcard.

The hike from the High Falls Access Area is about 4.4 miles round trip and is considered moderate, making it a great adventure for anyone looking to explore one of Transylvania County’s most beautiful natural treasures.

What makes Bridal Veil Falls so special is how unique it is. The water drops over an overhanging ledge, then spreads across a long, sloping granite face before flowing into the pool below. It is peaceful, dramatic, and absolutely worth the walk.

That is one of the things I love most about living in the Brevard area. We are surrounded by waterfalls, forest trails, mountain views, and outdoor places that remind you to slow down and take in the beauty around you.

Whether you are hiking DuPont for the first time or you have called these mountains home for years, Bridal Veil Falls is always worth a visit.
