The Haven of Transylvania County The Haven of Transylvania County is located at 126 Oakdale St., Brevard NC 28712, Phone is 828-877-2040. The Haven is an 18 bed homeless shelter.

Intake interviews are done by appointment Monday through Thursday. All applicants must complete an intake interview and background check. We provide our residents with more than shelter, we help them find long term solutions to their problems. Residents may stay up to 90 days. A goal plan is put in place within a week of their entry and progress is monitored. The Haven Family House is a 5 bedroom house renovated into a temporary shelter for families. Families can stay here a longer period of time and are expected to achieve goals set per individual family. Both shelters offer laundry facilities, mail and message services, zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol. Upon intake interview, potential residents undergo an extensive background check. Residents that have violent crimes or recent felonies, may not be considered for tenancy.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Colin Pelton, a beloved member of The Haven family.

Colin leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of faith, compassion, and service. He volunteered hundreds of hours at the shelter, including countless overnight shifts. For four years, he helped facilitate our Code Purple Shelter—sometimes spending weeks at a time making sure our neighbors had a safe, warm place to come in out of the cold. For the past three years, he continued that service as a valued member of our Board of Directors.

As an alumnus of The Haven, Colin understood our mission in a deeply personal way. He became a faithful financial supporter and encouraged others in the community, including fellow alumni, to give back as well. His life was a beautiful example of turning lived experience into compassion and service for others.

Colin’s faith was at the heart of who he was. He did not simply talk about loving his neighbor—he lived it. He saw people who were hurting, welcomed them without judgment, and served them with the love and compassion of Christ. When someone was not yet ready to stay at The Haven, he often gave them a place to land until they were.

Colin’s heart was every bit as big as his jokes, and his wonderful sense of humor brought laughter wherever he went. He did not simply volunteer at The Haven—he became part of our family. His laughter, generosity, faith, and servant’s heart will be deeply missed, but the lives he touched and the legacy he leaves behind will remain with us.

We find comfort in knowing Colin is now at home with the Lord he loved and served so faithfully. Please keep his family, friends, our staff, and all who loved him in your thoughts and prayers.
