Lake Nippenicket, which locals simply call “The Nip.” It’s one of Bridgewater’s best-known natural landmarks and has a fascinating mix of history, wildlife, recreation.
It spans about 354 acres and is considered a Massachusetts “Great Pond.”
Very shallow, averaging only about 3 feet deep with a maximum depth around 6 feet.
Archaeological evidence shows Native Americans lived around the lake thousands of years ago.
Because it’s connected to the Hockomock Swamp and the famous Bridgewater Triangle, The Nip has long been associated with local ghost stories and mysterious sightings. Residents have shared tales of strange lights over the water, phantom fires, and other unexplained events. While these stories are part of local folklore rather than proven facts, they’ve helped make the area one of southeastern Massachusetts’ most talked-about “mystery spots.”
For many Bridgewater residents, though, The Nip is simply a beautiful place to fish, paddle, watch wildlife, and enjoy a sunset over the water.

Pat arrived at Viva in 2022. She loves her neighbors and says she has never met anyone here who wasn’t friendly! She loves gnomes and has a small collection. She also enjoys watercolor painting, knitting & drawing. Local organic farms are also a favorite of hers!
