The Detroit Athletic Club plans to buy a neighboring building from Grand Valley State University for $6.225 million.

Grand Valley’s board of trustees this week approved a sale of the three-story, 25,000 square foot office building on Madison Avenue in downtown Detroit, which it has owned for more than 15 years, as the West Michigan-based university shifts its focus to other Detroit locations where it leases space.

The DAC has long leased space in Grand Valley’s building immediately west of its main Albert Kahn-designed building that dates back to 1915, predominately for storage and administrative purposes, according to a Charles Johnson, executive manager of the DAC. Those uses will continue for the foreseeable future and any future plans will go through the club’s traditional governance process, Johnson added.
