I just got through one of the most stressful months of my life.

Changing real estate firms is not an easy process. Not for anyone involved. It comes with paperwork, uncertainty, long days, and more moving parts than most people ever see.

At the same time, we've been dealing with a major issue involving one of our rental properties, a situation that has probably taken five years off my life. Add that to my normal schedule of working 16 hours a day, five or six days a week, and another few hours on Sunday if things are slow, and it finally caught up with me.

A few weeks ago, I started having what I thought were heart palpitations. After dealing with the discomfort for about a week, I went to the doctor. It turned out that the stress had become so intense, and the reflux so severe, that I had actually inflamed and burned my esophagus. The "palpitations" were esophageal spasms caused by that inflammation.

For nearly a month, I lived on chicken, potatoes, and bread. No alcohol. No coffee. No soda. Just bland food and a lot of patience.

Thankfully, I'm finally feeling better and easing back into a normal diet. I even enjoyed one of my guilty pleasures recently: a Whopper and a Dr Pepper.

The stress of the move is largely behind me now. Not everything has completely worked itself out, but life feels much more normal again. During all of this, we still filmed videos, I drove all over the region meeting clients, listing houses, and showing properties. I still managed to walk several miles a day and, most importantly, keep up with this awesome boy of mine.

I've always tried to be thankful for my food, but this experience gave me a whole new appreciation for something most of us never think twice about. Being able to sit down, eat a meal, and enjoy it without pain is a gift.

It's funny how quickly we take the ordinary things for granted until they're gone.

The Russell st house is looking different. The original columns are back up and the chimneys are repaired. They are working hard to preserve all the original white oak trim, inside. It's coming along pretty fast. And don't worry, the windows were replaced a few years back. The new owner was sad about that, but worked with them.

At first glance, many old houses appear to have grown over time, and in a sense, they have.

One common feature of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century homes in America, particularly throughout the South and Appalachia, was the detached kitchen. These kitchens were often located just a few steps from the main house rather than far across the yard. In some cases, they were later connected by covered breezeways or enclosed passages, eventually becoming part of the home itself. Looking at an old house today, it can sometimes be difficult to tell where the original dwelling ended and the kitchen began.

Detached kitchens served several practical purposes. Before electricity and modern appliances, cooking was done over open hearths or large wood-burning stoves that generated tremendous heat. By keeping the kitchen separate, families could keep the main house cooler during the summer months.

Fire was perhaps the greatest concern. A stray spark from a hearth could quickly destroy an entire home. Separating the kitchen reduced that risk significantly and was considered a sensible precaution.

Cooking also produced smoke, odors, grease, and constant activity. The kitchen was often the busiest working space on the property, and keeping it separate helped preserve the comfort and cleanliness of the main house.

Throughout Appalachia, detached kitchens remained common well into the nineteenth century. As technology improved and concerns about fire diminished, many homeowners enclosed the space between the house and kitchen or incorporated the kitchen into later additions. What began as two separate buildings often evolved into the single structure we see today.

The next time you notice an old home with an unusual wing, a narrow connector, or what appears to be an oddly placed addition, look closely. You may be seeing the remains of a detached kitchen that has been absorbed into the house over generations.

AI slop rewarded by Facebook with 240k followers, while creators like myself are scratching their heads, every day, over how to continue reaching people with real places. This is a BIG problem. It takes attention away from real places with real history.

Before you like something like this or get too excited, think for a second... If it looks like a fairytale, it probably is.

Facebook is supposed to tell you, the viewer, that it's AI, but there are ways around it that these cheaters figure out.

I, like many other creators and agents, use AI for different things, but I utilize it mostly for research and help with ads. We've always done our own designs, and it can be helpful with that. As for research, I'll say that in the end, nothing can take the place of a good, old-fashioned book when doing research. But this kind of stuff is an absolute lie, and it will get no support from me.

Watch out for this, don't support it, stay away from it, and tell Facebook that you are "not interested".

There is nothing quite like this porch. 6:30 a.m. The city is just waking up. We are going to church in Abingdon, today. It's a nice day for a drive.
