We spend a lot of time trying to buy a better house.

Kids are mostly hoping we build a better home.

And yes, the practical stuff matters. Enough space matters. A safe neighborhood matters. The mortgage payment definitely matters. I’m not pretending countertops are evil and Zillow is ruining America.

But those usually aren’t the things childhood memories are built around.

Kids remember the sound of everyone laughing in the kitchen. The chair that somehow became “their” chair. The meal you made all the time. The person who looked up when they walked through the door.

They remember whether home felt peaceful after a hard day.

Whether they could mess up without feeling like everything was falling apart.

Whether somebody listened when the story took 17 minutes and probably could’ve taken four.

We spend adulthood worrying about making the house bigger, nicer, newer, and more valuable.

Meanwhile, some of the most valuable things we can put inside it don’t show up in an appraisal.

A house is an asset.

A home is an experience.

And years from now, that experience is probably what our kids will remember most.
