Before Dolly Parton had the rhinestones, the wigs, the millions of records or even a television set in her house, she had a to***co stick and a tin can.
As a little girl in the mountains of East Tennessee, Dolly would use them as a pretend microphone, stand on the porch of her family’s small cabin and imagine she was performing at the Grand Ole Opry.
She was one of 12 children, growing up with very little money. But music was everywhere. Her mother sang. Relatives played instruments. And Dolly started turning stories into rhymes when she was about five years old.
This was not a childhood fantasy she quietly outgrew.
By 10, she was appearing on local radio and television in Knoxville. Her family did not even own a television yet. Dolly later used money she earned performing to help buy one.
At 11, she co-wrote “Puppy Love” with her uncle Bill Owens. Two years later, Dolly and her grandmother endured a 30-hour bus trip to Louisiana so the 13-year-old could record it for a tiny record label.
Then came the place she had been pretending to perform since childhood.
The Grand Ole Opry.
In 1959, 13-year-old Dolly stood backstage at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Johnny Cash introduced her to the audience simply as a “little girl from East Tennessee.”
She walked onto one of the most intimidating stages in country music and sang George Jones’ “You Gotta Be My Baby.”
The audience demanded an encore.
Then another.
Then another.
Dolly Parton received three encores that night.
Ten years later, she became an official member of the Grand Ole Opry.
The little girl who once used a tin can for a microphone had made it onto the stage she had been pretending was hers all along.
