August is easing toward September, and there’s already a shift in the air. That particular late-summer light that means fall isn’t far off. It’s been a wonderful season on the Reach. Thank you to everyone who came back to High Head this year, and to everyone who found their way here for the first time.

We love summer, but we also love to see the first hints of fall: the light turning gold, the air sharpening, the first blush of color at the tree line. Some of our favorite months in Maine are still to come.

Every room at High Head holds a small collection. Nordic furniture with the same clean lines as the house. Paintings by Maine artists who know this coast: the granite, the light, the blue of Eggemoggin Reach. Nautical scenes that could be the view from the window. And old photographs of the house and Cirrus, long before us.

Look closely and the collection tells its own story.

August evenings on Eggemoggin Reach move slowly. Porpoises and seals surface to soak up the last bit of sun, a handful of schooners are rafted up off WoodenBoat, and boats drift through the dog days of summer. High Head from the water, the Tower catching the light — a good way to end the day.

This Saturday was the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, the largest wooden boat regatta in the world. This amazing event has been happening right in High Head’s backyard since 1985 - and we have front seats to it all.

Our very own Cirrus raced this year, along with approximately 100 other wooden boats. What a sight to behold on a perfect Maine day.
