Why should landlords be forced to choose between proof that a tenant can pay and proof that they actually pay?

A credit check and income verification answer two completely different questions:

• Income shows the ability to pay today.
• Credit shows a history of paying obligations.

One cannot replace the other.

Mayor Mamdani’s proposal would force landlords to screen applicants with incomplete information. That creates more risk, more subjective decisions and fewer protections for responsible landlords and tenants.

You cannot demand that landlords accept the full financial risk while denying them the basic tools needed to evaluate that risk.

🚨 SEVEN YEARS WITHOUT PAYING RENT—HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?

NYC Housing Court delays can allow some tenants to remain in apartments for years without paying rent.

Many landlords lose up to three years of rental income. In this case, it was seven years.

But landlords are not the only ones who suffer. Unpaid rent, legal fees, taxes, insurance, and operating expenses eventually lead to higher rents for everyone else—including responsible tenants who pay on time.

Is this fair? Who should be held accountable?
