👇 Check out our latest ART BREAK featuring a fabulous piece by Chandelle “Seabeard” Carter, a Crown Heights-based artist whose work is heavily influenced by pop culture and the black experience.

As a first-generation child born to Jamaican immigrants, it was important for her to depict things that she experienced in her life. This embroidered piece titled “Brooklyn Lunch” represents the amalgamation of urban Brooklyn living and Caribbean roots.

Follow on IG for commissions and to keep up with her one-of-a-kind embroidered art, sculptures, pyrography, Christmas ornaments and other works.

Pick up the latest Park Slope Reader to see the art in person!

🖌 ART BREAK encourages us to take a break and appreciate art in our day-to-day lives. We invite local artists to submit a piece that reflects their Brooklyn experience, while providing them a break through a mini grant to help them pursue their passion.

Embroiderer and multimedia artist Chandelle “Seabeard” Carter created this stunning piece that captures the beauty of food, culture and familial roots interlaced in a way that simultaneously tells a story and makes us hungry.

Did you know that, like LA, NYC has its own filmmaking history? Ours dates to the early 20th century when the city was hooked on silent films. During this time, Harlem was a major hub for Black film culture, home to movie houses serving Black audiences.

In our latest blog post we share where to celebrate Black cinema in NYC today, from film screenings and series to clubs.

From the establishment of one of the largest independent African American communities in the US at Weeksville in the mid-1800s, to the cultural bloom of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s, to the Civil Rights movements that shaped the city in the 1960s, to the many voices and organization...
