I’ve heard many scam horror stories in my almost ten years in Real Estate. Thousands and thousands of dollars stolen from hard working people trying their hardest to navigate a crazy rental market (And let me tell you, as one of the top rental agents in Brooklyn, it’s ALWAYS crazy.)

Here are a couple of tips to stay safe out there.

Always see the apt in person. If you can’t make it, send someone you trust or hire an agent to help.

Do your homework on who’s renting the apartment. Make sure they are a licensed agent or Actually the landlord. Any reputable agent will have their license number available.

Avoid Craigslist! I know it sucks to hear but most scams I’ve seen came from Craigslist. Scammers download the pictures and video of listed apartments and post them as their own on sites that don’t require exclusive listings. Like FB market place and Craigslist.

Never send any money prior to viewing an apt signing a lease.

Deliver checks in person. No CASH! Opt to come to the office and get a receipt of delivery.

The absolute best way to keep yourself and your money safe is to higher licensed representation.
