We're proud to share News 12's feature today on Monshe and the Yard Opportunity Shop! Melissa's mission goes beyond selling gluten-free treats: she's determined to create opportunities for fellow women-and-minority entrepreneurs and carve out a space dedicated to feel-good, healthy indulgence.

Behind the business is a deeply personal story. Melissa credits her passion for baking to time spent in the kitchen with her late mother, Monshelia, the inspiration behind the bakery’s name.

75 years ago, the week of April 1 - 8 in 1951 was declared "Brooklyn Navy Yard Week" by Thomas E. Dewey, Governor of the state of New York. The proclamation recognized the Yard at that time as one of the largest industrial plants in the state and the largest shipyard in the country. Today, we continue to carry out this historic legacy as a center for modern industry and manufacturing, and a hub for job creation.

In 1833, the Naval Lyceum was established at BNY as both an organization and a space intended for learning. It housed a lending library, a reading room, a lecture hall, and a museum displaying a collection of coins, ship models, portraits of former presidents, and more. The organization also produced the first professional naval publication in 1836, the bimonthly Naval Magazine.

Happy International Women's Day! BNY is proud to operate under Lindsay Greene, the Yard's first Black woman president and CEO, as well as provide the resources, space, and support for many women-owned businesses to flourish here. They operate across industries from technology to retail to art and design, and without them our campus would not be as vibrant and innovative as it is today.

Last week we celebrated community, diversity, and entrepreneurship with the launch of Monshe, a WOC-owned bakery specializing in gluten-and sugar-free treats and the first business to feature at our Yard Opportunity Shop in Building 92.

Owner Melissa Groneveldt is hoping her residency at YOS will provide "[. . .] something to show entrepreneurs that as long as you persevere, anything’s within reach.”

Today, BNY is celebrating our 225th birthday! Since our establishment in 1801, the Navy Yard has evolved from building and launching some of America's mightiest ships to a thriving industrial park that over 500 businesses call home. No matter what changes, our spirit of innovation and dedication to providing jobs for our community always remains a constant. We're grateful for our rich history and excited to keep building on our future.
