You can't make this stuff up: Yesterday one of my former clients had Fish and Game knock on her door, asking if they could borrow a large container of liquid soap. "Why, might I ask?" Seems a black bear had been found careening down the side of RT 106 just north of Reading, bumping into things and generally creating havoc, due to its big goofy bear head being stuck in a milk can. It was crashing into trees and rocks, making a racket, and generally in a bad mood. Fish and Game for some reason did not initially want to sedate the bear, so of course they call in the local fire dept, and say "boys, we need you to hold the big bear down while we try to pull the milk can off its head". Of course they readily complied. That didn't work well, so someone had the brilliant idea to try liquid soap as lubrication. That's what brought them to my former client's door. Alas, the liquid soap didn't work, so the fire dept finally cut the can off the bear's head after it was tranquilized by F+G. When the bear came to, he awoke in a much better mood thanks to not having his head stuck in a can, and headed off into the hills, to live happily ever after.

A 120-pound Vermont black bear is back in the woods after getting its head stuck in a milk can. It took a state biologist, firefighters and police about 45 minutes to free the bear's head from the can after the animal was found late Sunday morning off Vermont Route 106 in the town of Reading.

On NPR's coverage of JD Salinger yesterday, my grandparents' restaurant Nap's Lunch in Windsor VT was prominently mentioned as being one of his favorite character research resources while writing Catcher in the Rye. He lived in Cornish. My grandmother remembers him coming in for breakfast almost every morning, and she's convinced some of the characters in the book were based on some of her old regulars.

We currently have 8 properties under agreement, the most since June '08, and pretty darn unusual for the middle of January. Feels like things are turning around....
