Have you ever noticed your toilet gurgling or smelled a foul odor like sewer gas in your home? These could be signs that your plumbing traps aren't working correctly!

The key to understanding these issues is SLAM-O-BEC, an acronym for:

S: Syphonage - When water is unintentionally siphoned out of the trap, breaking the water seal.

L: Leak - Leaks in the trap can lead to water seal loss, water damage, and entry of sewer gases.

A: Aspiration - The drawing in of air or fluid due to pressure differences, compromising the water seal.

M: Momentum - The force of water flow can displace the water seal, especially during heavy drainage.

O: Oscillation - Vibrations or oscillations in the plumbing system can disturb the water seal.

B: Back pressure - Pressure from the sewer system can force gases and contaminated water back into the trap.

E: Evaporation - Over time, water in traps can evaporate, leading to a loss of the water seal.

C: Capillary attraction - Water movement within the trap material due to surface tension, affecting the integrity of the water seal.

By addressing these issues, you can ensure your home remains safe and efficient.
